Texas CHL Laws

Texas, the Lone Star state, has tailored and fine tuned the laws of the old frontier to suit current day social obligations and expectations for the CHL.
The following illustrates different classes of weapons and which of those require licenses in Texas.

Once an individual has applied for, been granted and have received their Texas concealed handgun license or texas concealed carry permit, they may carry their handgun in the following locations or premises:
- Routine carry in public places not licensed to sell alcohol, and which are not posted with a 30.06 sign
- A persons' own premises or premises under their control, including in their motor vehicle (handguns in a vehicle must be concealed)
- The premises of businesses licensed to sell alcohol.

Regardless of if you are the holder of Texas concealed handgun license or Texas concealed carry permit, it is a MISDEMEANOR to carry a handgun:
- At professional sporting events
- Onto another persons’ premises, after an effective 30.06 notification has been sighted

Regardless of if you are the holder of Texas concealed handgun license or Texas concealed carry permit, it is a FELONY to carry a handgun:
- Onto race track premises, either dog or horse racing
- Into a business taking more than 51% of its’ income from serving alcohol
- Onto school premises, without prior permission
- At state correctional facilities
- Into any place of voting, including during early voting
- Into secure areas of airports that require passing inside metal detectors
- Into the premises of a courtroom, without prior permission by the court
